AN INTRODUCTION TO RAW FOOD
what is raw? why eat raw?
what is living food?

'describes a material that is in its natural unprocessed form' Wikipedia
Any new concept takes time to integrate & become the 'norm'. 'Green & organic' are almost passe marketing buzz words & part of our everyday vocabulary. Only 10 years ago organic & green products appealed to a much smaller % of the population.
Chef, Jaimie Oliver, highlighted the horror of what we feed our children with his TV series, School Dinners.
It prompted people to prioritise children's nutrition, reminding us that food has a direct effect on our health & general well being.
Now words like 'raw & live' food ask us to take a closer look at what we are getting out of our organic food. Raw is interested in how nutrients are used & absorbed by our bodies. Nutrients like anti-oxidants, amino acids & vitamins are responsible for healing, rejuvenating & energising our tired cells.
All nutrients in raw food are intact & undamaged by heat. Many nutrients & enzymes are damaged or removed from food when heated over 48 C/ 120 F.
Living foods have a much higher enzyme content. Sprouting seeds & nuts activates 'dormant' enzymes through germination, they are then considered living.
Sprouted grains & seeds, fruits, vegetables & greens make up a basic raw food diet. Any raw grains, seeds or beans can be easily sprouted, & are powerhouses of goodness.

why eat raw? - why not?
"Let food be your medicine" HIPPOCRATES
For generations we have eaten cooked food - why? People in cold climates like hot food, & simple things like 'what's available?' are key. The majority of our grandparents would have been brought up on 'organic' produce - not because there was a choice - but because unless you grew your own fruit & vegetables your eating habits were dictated by grocers who would have sold locally farmed produce.
Imported air freight from less developed countries providing 'exotic' foods, out of season produce & genetically modified (GM) food has certainly given us more choices than the potatoes & leafy greens we were happily boiling up to this point :)
However, supermarkets are creating a generation with little comprehension of the term 'seasonal vegetables' or local produce.
what foods are best eaten raw
Knowing what foods are best eaten raw is your starting point, from there you can integrate them into your diet. All fruits, greens, seeds, sprouts & nuts are at their nutritionally best raw. They can be made into milks, juices, smoothies, salads & raw food recipes can be as yummy as cooked food recipes.

Note: Raw potatoes are horrid & raw kidney beans are poisionous.
grow your own
With a healthy dose of enthusiam it is very easy to grow your own vegetables. With the help of window sills, patios or gardens you can use pots, tubs, old tyres, watering cans, ice cream/ margarine tubs - to plant seeds or seedlings.
evolution
Breast milk is raw & offers us the most powerful nutrients & fuel for growth & development. All animals eat raw food. Humans are the only species that cook their food. Supposedly the most intelligent species, yet the most diseased.
heat damage
Science tells us that nutrients are damaged or totally removed from food when cooked above 48C/ 120F.
Ingesting live food helps boost natural immune levels & aids the body's ability to heal itself. Raw food promotes sustained energy, avoiding refined sugar & caffine highs & lows.
chimpanzees & gorillas
In her acclaimed book Green for Life, Victoria Boutenko compares human & chimpanzee DNA. Primates consume mother's milk & once weaned eat a variety of fruit & greens. Some primates occasionally eat small animals but it is not part of their main diet & does not contribute to their overall growth. This is a big topic, & the research is not my own - but it does prompt us to think for ourselves & make up our own minds about ideas that may not yet be mainstream.
Gorillas are depicted by their large strong frames, yet eat only greens. Something to ponder for those who feel we need meat for protein.
ILR clinic>protein
A diet including varied greens provides complete amino acid profiles which our bodies can directly convert into proteins. Proteins from animals (meat) need to be broken down by our body & then converted into proteins it can use.
smoothies
Raw smoothies are great for kids as they contain vitamins, nutrients, FIBER & energy. You can put whatever you like in a smoothie - green smoothies are a fantastic way to get large amounts of greens into your diet without having to munch through bales of leaves!

what is living food?
8
Put simply, living food is not dead food. What kills food? Heating food over 120 F destroys most nutrients in food, & can create free-radicals in fats. All 'food enzymes' are destroyed at temperatures as low as 118 F.
Live food enzymes become active in food as we eat it & are designed to aid digestion.
Eating 'enzyme dead' food puts more pressure on our organs - over time this leads to them getting very tired. Raw food is easier to digest & is much speedier to pass through our digestive system.
cravings
Reducing the nutritional content of our food makes our bodies crave more food as it is still hungry for nutrients. Eating live food satisfies our nutritional cravings - however, the issue of emotional craving is something I will touch on further into this article.
seed of life
... Mother Nature's most efficient design.
All raw foods - fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains & plant syrups are 'alive'.
Part of a plant's life cycle is to produce fruits. These fruits contain all the required nutrients to support the growth & generation of living cells.
Seeds are specifically designed to provide dense amounts of nutrients to enable germination & continue the cycle of life.
When sprouted seeds are at their most nutritionally potent.
Sprouting takes place after a seed has been soaked in cold water.
If a seed comes into contact with hot water - over 48C 120F the seed does not sprout, it dies a tragic death.
Our creator's design is nothing short of amazing where nature is concerned.
weight loss
Eating a raw food diet will naturally result in weight loss. There is very little fat in raw food. Natural fats in foods like avocado, nuts, olive, hemp & flax oils are all healthy oils which the body uses to maintain our cells.
To be clear - I am by no means suggesting eating raw food as a one off 'diet' to lose weight. Going raw is a lifestyle.
I personally look at life with a 'never say never' approach. Life is a journey, is it not? Are you the same person you were 5 years ago? or even a year ago?
Raw may be right for some people now & if you've read this far then you may be there!
The main thing is recognising the benefits of raw food & integrating as much raw food into your diet as you desire. Balance is key & moving at your own speed. When you are able to intuitively listen to what your body needs - you will know what is right for you & what isn't. It will be obvious from how you feel.
Storm Talifero has written a lot of material on his raw experiences over the last 30 years. He covers the subject precisely explaining how raw food allows the body to regain its natural shape. If overweight - you will lose weight. If underweight - you will gain weight, gaining lean muscle not fat.
Exercise is an important part of the raw food lifestyle. Many people notice increased energy levels, however, depending on where you are coming from this may take time to balance out. I myself started on the raw path as a means to heal myself from extreme hyperthyroidsim. I was suffering extremely low energy as my endocrine system was at nil. Since then I have been growing in strength but am gradually feeling more desire to exercise.
Raw is a journey & most of all about honest acceptance of who & what you are.
emotional weight loss
"I feel as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders"
Emotions play a huge role in weight gain. We all know how much lighter we feel after having released a big chunk of sadness, grief, guilt, fear or anger.
We are used to the idea that stress can lead to stomach ulcers & hair loss as it is in medical journals & has been proven scientifically. If we continue that line of reasoning why wouldn't ALL emotions manifest physically if unresolved?
Weightwatchers currently advertise,
"...the cravings weren't in my tummy, they were in my head".
comfort eating & endorphines
There are many ways to avoid nasty emotions, comfort eating is one. We've all suppressed an emotion by eating something to make us feel better, right?
Sugar induces a feeling of 'euphoria'. The taste of chocolate stimulates the brain releasing dopamine & endorphins. You'll also experience an energy boost as the sugar slips into the bloodstream.
As I used to tell my son where sweets & fizzy drinks were concerned "after every high there comes a low."
The sugar rush is over & you have your first substance addiction. If you chose to experience & release the emotion you're trying to avoid, you will automatically lose the substance craving. Easy huh? :)
Eating raw food gives you the opportunity to notice all these emotions as they bubble up to the surface. The minute you find yourself wanting a bowl of chips or in my case a doughnut - I know a 'tricky' emotion has been triggered that I don't want to feel.
Of course it is OK to choose not feel that emotion & stop off on your way home for a bag of crisps - but by being honest with yourself & acknowledging that's what's happening will change how you eat & want to eat.
That's the lifestyle. Simple yet highly challenging :)
